In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, two sisters seized their opportunity to open a new retail business in Galveston’s central business district. Becky Palmer, from Spring, Texas, and her local sister, Tammie Taylor, opened the doors to Antiques on Winnie, September 30, 2017. Today their business, aptly located on Winnie between 23rd and 24th streets, is thriving. Tourists and locals alike have deemed the store a “must stop” when antiquing in Galveston. “We love meeting customers from all over Texas and beyond,” said Palmer, “but it’s really great to be appreciated by your local patrons too.” Antiques on Winnie has become a favorite spot on the Galveston Art Center’s Artwalk. The store stays open until 9 pm on Artwalk nights, and offers customers complimentary hors d'oeuvres, champagne punch and a selection of wines. “Artwalk is always a really festive time around here,” explains Taylor. “We have fun preparing delicious bites and drinks to share with our customers, and we end up having a great evening selling antiques and visiting with friends, old and new.” The next Artwalk is Saturday, October 13, which will also be the date Antiques on Winnie hosts its one year anniversary celebration. Palmer and Taylor have plans to serve food and beverages all day and say they are working out details for more fun, so check out their website or Facebook page for the latest. “We are so happy and really proud to mark a year of success in our business,” said Taylor. Palmer added, “We’re excited to build on the great start we’ve had, and we look forward to an even bigger and better second year.” The store features a wide variety of constantly changing merchandise creatively curated by the two sisters, along with their friend and long-time local antique dealer Jo Mooney. The three of them work hard to bring their customers outstanding, quality furniture, glassware and china, collectibles from old bottles to rosaries, vintage books, albums and clothing, Galveston souvenirs and treasures – something to fit most any budget or style. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Galveston Welcomes New Antique Store October 5, 2017 Galveston, Tx. On September 30, a new retail business opened in Galveston as a direct result of Hurricane Harvey. Becky Palmer, from Spring, TX, and her local sister, Tammie Taylor, are long-time antique dealers, who had their wares in a co-op on Postoffice. Storm damage to the building forced the temporary closure of that business. Faced with the daunting prospect of moving their merchandise to a storage facility, the sisters decided to explore the possibility of opening their own store. They quickly found an ideal location - 2323 Winnie, home of the old Galveston Model Dairy and Creamery. The charming space with high ceilings and tiled walls was soon home to a flurry of activity as Palmer and Taylor set up shop, along with two more antique dealers, Kathleen Sabala and Jo Mooney. Their hard work paid off and Antiques on Winnie opened its doors last Saturday, September 30. “It’s hard to believe we pulled this off so quickly,” Palmer said, proudly surveying her store. “Six weeks ago we were waiting on Hurricane Harvey to land.” Taylor added, “the last thing on our minds was the possibility of opening a new business. But that door opened wide and we just decided to go for it.” The antique store is situated on Winnie Street near the new Galveston post office on 23rd, and in between the historic Lyceum at First Evangelical Lutheran Church and Trinity Episcopal School. “We really like this location,” said Palmer. “It’s easy to get to so antique shoppers will definitely find us, plus there’s free parking all around our store.” Antiques on Winnie features a wide variety of merchandise. Furniture, glassware and china, collectibles from pocket knives to rosaries, vintage books and clothing, Galveston souvenirs and treasures – something to fit most any budget or style. “We like to think we have something for everyone,” explained Taylor. “We really want to become one of those spots people make a point to visit every time they come to Galveston,” added Palmer, “so we’re going to work hard to keep things fresh, bringing in new merchandise all the time.” The sisters chose to go with a simple name for their new business, “probably because we didn’t have time to think of anything fancier,” laughed Palmer. “I like it,” said Taylor, “it may be simple but it’s also easy to remember and says everything needed – what we sell and where we are.” Antiques on Winnie will hold its Grand Opening celebration Saturday, October 14. Refreshments will be served all day and the store will stay open late for ArtWalk patrons. “We hope everyone will stop by and check us out,” said Palmer, “we’re definitely worth a look.” Antiques on Winnie is a traditional retail antique store, located in the heart of downtown Galveston, at 2323 Winnie.
